Parents enrolling their kids in 'idol academies'?

A recent trend of 'idol academies' popped up in Gangnam.  Its popularity was fuelled by the fact that kids who are "good at singing and dancing are popular in class."  One grade 2 student is enrolled in the 'idol basics' program and his mother said, "I enrolled him in it because he said he wanted to attend an idol academy and he showed no interest in taekwondo or piano.  I think if he learns to dance and sing, he'll get more popular among people his age and also it'll boost his confidence."

It's around $100-$200 for sessions twice weekly (4 hours each) which apparently isn't a big difference with fees for taekwondo and piano classes.  The expensive price also takes into account that this is an investment for children to boost their chances of being accepted into music departments in universities later on.

Korean Economics via Daum: "Do you still attend Taekwondo and piano classes?", trend these days in Gangnam and Mokdong are 'idol academies'

1. [+2897, -67] Reporter, did you research how much tuition is for taekwondo and piano classes?  5 days a week and 20 hours class time is around $100 to $150.  Meanwhile, idol academies are $200 for a 4-hour class twice weekly.  How is that a 'similar price'?  It's already worrying that little kids don't care for children's songs and only follow provocative songs and dances these days.  Please go and find out instead if that academy you're blabbing about is even registered officially.

2. [+1517, -34] Parents that think like that are just tsk tsk

3. [+790, -19] Don't cry... Ryan...

4. [+472, -5] I just think what's wrong with the world... when elementary and middle school students are forced to do sexy dances... Mass media plays a big role for a world where we can go after our true dreams

5. [+388, -3] Don't let others decide what you should do, self-directed learning is needed for kids and adults too.  Let's try to encourage people to think critically on their own.

6. [+359, -2] This is totally an ad.

7. [+302, -4] Forcing them to take this class and that class... I don't think that's right... now we've got an idol academy, what's up with that...

8. [+253, -3] I don't think there's another country where the TV ads are filled with celebrities as much as ours.. That just means that consumers choose products not for the quality but for the celebrity that endorses it.  That's why people want to become a celebrity so they can earn easy money and get a pass for gambling or drinking and driving, in the end you'll still get tons of money from modelling fees

9. [+246, -2] Is it possible to learn a talent that's only given by the heavens..

10. [+241, -5] It's a fuss here in Bundang too... every building's basement has a practice room... for people to... practice dances...

BTS donates 100 million won to 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and a Safer Society

Requested!

All 7 members donated 10 million won each and their company donated another 30 million won.  This move means a lot and shows that they're not afraid to stand for their beliefs in a situation where people's names get put on the cultural blacklist if they show support for social issues like the Sewol ferry tragedy.

Herald Pop via Naver: [Exclusive] BTS donates 100 million won to 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and a Safer Society

1. [+13,624, -460] They've done a good deed. *Claps*

2. [+10,712, -371] That's awesome, deserving of compliments

3. [+10,237, -424] I'm not their fan but that's cool of them....

4. [+9329, -343] That's a great thing to do. Be successful.

5. [+8273, -338] They've got a kind heart tooㅠ

6. [+2947, -83] Speaking up about current events in songs and acceptance speeches, and especially donating to Sewol families. They're a group that deserves to be respected.

7. [+2868, -80] I'm a middle school teacher.  To me, SHINee still seems like a new group and I don't know much about idols butㅠ BTS is a popular group among my female students right now.  I hope they keep doing great deeds like this as a respectable role model for kids and as a group that gives off positivity ^^

8. [+2636, -70] A group with great character.  No matter how much you've come to earn, it's hard to donate money like this.. hope they receive a daesang this year.  Fighting!

Seoul Metro sparks anger for telling passengers to 'stay and wait' during subway fire

A Seoul subway train caught fire leading to an evacuation of 100 passengers.  The fire is presumed to have been caused by a power failure.  Seoul Metro is facing criticism as testimonies showed the operator requested passengers to stay inside the train initially at the outbreak of the fire.  Some passengers said they escaped by opening the emergency door after seeing smoke.  A passenger said, "We did not hear any announcement about evacuating the train, passengers escaped by themselves after seeing the smoke and saw the fire after evacuating the train."

Yeonhap News via Naver: 'Wait' when there's a fire on the subway... Seoul Metro 'safety concerns' controversy

1. [+12,264, -101] After what happened with Sewol, if you hear "wait where you are", you have to put your life on the line and get out immediately.

2. [+6891, -86] Did they forget what happened in the Daegu subway fire already? Nothing's changing in this country...
(t/n: In the 2003 Daegu fire, an arsonist set fire killing 192 people and injuring 151 people.  Inadequate emergency plans and actions contributed to the disaster.  The operator made 3 announcements telling the passengers to 'stay seated' until the operator was advised 'to just hurry and run'.  The operator opened the doors and ran away but he removed the master key which trapped the train doors and locked the passengers inside.  Later reports said that 79 passengers remained trapped and died due to this.  This incident sparked anger throughout SK.)

3. [+6535, -106] Can't put my trust on anyone in this country.....

4. [+6185, -248] Mayor Park Won Soon stop focusing on the mayor candidates and focus on correcting operations so that there won't be anymore problems on the metro.  At least arrange a proper security measures manual.  Think about this as this is the path of being a mayor.

5. [+4085, -260] Looks like these people are turning similar to Park Geun Hye.

6. [+878, -24] At Hell Joseon, whenever there's an incident they always say to "wait"ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+752, -30] Am I the only one who got reminded of Sewol ferry after reading the announcement they made?

8. [+699, -29] Park Won Soon, someone who has 3% approval rate, stop talking about the elections and take some interest in the citizens' safety

9. [+611, -8] I have trauma just hearing the words 'wait'.  I feel like I really won't believe it in any kind of situation anymore even if the right thing to do would be to wait.

10. [+526, -13] Were they trying to make a second Sewol accident??  Do they think the citizens would believe those announcements

Prosecutors arrest culture minister and chief of staff for creating blacklist of artists

On Saturday, Cho Yoon Sun, current culture minister, was arrested for suspected involvement in creating the blacklist of artists critical of Park Geun Hye and the government.  Artists on the blacklist were cut off from government funding and private investment and placed under state surveillance.

Background info:

170109 Culture minister admits to blacklist of artists who criticized Park Geun Hye

Cho Yoon Sun is the first sitting minister arrested in South Korea. She gave her resignation shortly after her arrest.  Kim Ki Choon, chief of staff for Park Geun Hye, was also arrested and accused of ordering Cho to create the blacklist of "left-wing" artists.

Seoul Central District Court reported that they were arrested because the crime has been, "verified and there are risks of the accused seeking to destroy evidence."  The court approved the prosecutors' requests to arrest the two for alleged abused of power, perjury and other charges.

1. [+22,780, -534] Nice!!!!!!!!!!

2. [+20,786, -604] The Department of Justice has done what the citizens have been yearning for. This is only the beginning.

3. [+16,140, -569] Even now Hwang Gyo Ik is banned from KBS... and ParkSaMo is trying to ruin Jung Woo Sung.. they're boycotting 'The King'
(t/n: Jung Woo Sung screamed, "Park Geun Hye, come forward!" at an event, video here and his name was also on the blacklist.)

4. [+15,404, -488] Kim Ki Choon is the biggest enemy of Korea's democracy.  The CIA made a lot of people die through torture at that time.  He used his experience and knowledge in law for corruption (himself, his wife, father-in-law, son-in-law) and he would always make a way out or reduce damage to a minimum by using his power over law experts when he was in trouble.  He silently used his power to threaten people, killing them and hiding it by saying it was a suicide, framing them as North Korean followers, his plans for the constitution, his regional sentiments, and he was the trunk to the gate of Choi Soon Sil's scandal.  Kim Ki Choon is the biggest enemy of Korea's democracy.

5. [+11,520, -414] This should be a given....

6. [+4816, -141] Cho Eui Yeon (t/n: Judge who dismissed Samsung's LJY), are you reading this?

7. [+4640, -125] Reading this news made me more excited than the world cup win

8. [+4560, -122] ㅜㅜWatching the investigation counsel do their work makes me feel that there's still some good left in Korea!

9. [+4417, -118] Of course Kim Ki Choon and Cho Yoon Sun should be arrested!!!

10. [+3963, -109] I can sleep now

1. [+14,784, -537] Wear the number... guess she still hasn't come to her senses...

2. [+13,638, -371] She seriously looks like a different personㅋㅋ

3. [+12,046, -394] Park Geun Hye's future..

4. [+10,939, -341] Woo Byung Woo get your horn-rimmed glasses ready

5. [+10,411, -361] I want to see Park Geun Hye without her hair tied up being escorted by prosecutors already~

The 'coolest person' in the eyes of Korea's citizens nowadays

(t/n: Even though it's just an article talking about his fashion and style, I thought it'd also be nice to see who's behind the investigation counsel and not just the witnesses and suspects.)
Lee Kyu Chul, spokesperson for the investigation team

Joseon Ilbo via Naver: Perfectly matching coat and muffler... investigation counsel's spokesperson, wears clothes very well

1. [+4800, -153] The coolest person these days.

2. [+4563, -116] He does his job properly so everything he does seems awesome.

3. [+4035, -116] The investigation counsel reads what's on the people's minds so I'm always anticipating their reports

4. [+3363, -111] You're awesome~ fighting to the investigation team

5. [+2836, -106] He seems really cool and intelligent during their briefings. I always thought he was charming and looks like it's not just me who thinks that. His glasses suit him well too~^^ Please help ease the citizen's anger fairly, work hard, we're putting our trust on you.

6. [+653, -42] If you're a just man, whatever you wear will look good.

7. [+586, -28] Just as clean and nicely you wear your clothes, please investigate thoroughly too

8. [+553, -37] I'm drawn in by them more than celebrities these days! Fighting to the investigation counsel who looks the most charming when they put in their all in the work they do.

The bus driver missing 2,400 won, "I got fired while chaebols are set free"

(t/n: This was mentioned by the top comment on this article where a bus driver who was missing 2400 won (~$2) was fired and charged for embezzlement while Samsung's CEO, Lee Jae Yong was set free.)

No Cut News via Daum: 2,400 won bus driver "Chaebols are set free and I got fired"

1. [+10,864, -73] Ji Kang Hun said this before. "One law for the rich and another for the poor." I can truly feel the truth of these words these days.

2. [+9899, -63] This country really seems to be a country for chaebols and their vested interests.  The term "Hell Joseon" didn't come out of nowhere.

3. [+8291, -554] Presidents and government officials who can't be honest, once they're ordered to kill the 'flies'... to them it's only right that this person gets fired, to them he embezzled 2,400 won even though it could be a simple mistake...

4. [+2919, -18] 420 billion won, set free. 2400 won, fired. Well, that's fair. ㅋㅋ

5. [+2882, -21] Are you reading this? Future generations will remember you judge Jo Eui Yeon (t/n: The judge who made the decision to dismiss Lee Jae Yong's arrest.)

6. [+2583, -16] The Department of Justice can be thrown in the trash~

7. [+2217, -17] You see here in Hell Joseon, you have to take a lot for you not to get arrested..

8. [+2014, -12] What a dirty world...
